NJAA’s Fourth Annual Maintenance Mania Showcases Skills of Maintenance Professionals from Across the State

While the rest of the country was getting excited for the NCAA’s March Madness, 88 of New Jersey’s residential maintenance managers had a little competition of their own: the New Jersey Apartment Association’s (NJAA) Fourth Annual Maintenance Mania which took place at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison, NJ on Tues., March 13th.

Top-seeded, Dave Berryman of Bloomingdale, NJ continued his streak by winning the competition for the fourth year in a row, earning one of the top three spots in six of the nine competitions that included the dual flush retrofit, fire alarm installation and a crowd favorite—the race car competition in which all participants create a miniature race car out of maintenance materials. Fellow maintenance technicians at The Kamson Corporation Steve Guzman and Bryan Brennan came in second and third place respectively.

Mr. Berryman, along with Steve Guzman and Bryan Brennan will have the chance to represent New Jersey and the Northeast Region at the National Maintenance Mania competition, held during the National Apartment Association’s (NAA) 2012 Education Conference in Boston this June.  All three men work at properties owned by The Kamson Corporation of Englewood Cliffs, NJ.

“While Maintenance Mania is a fun event, the competitors take it, and their jobs, very seriously,” says Jean Maddalon, executive director for the NJAA. “We’re very proud of the work that all our maintenance professionals perform on a daily basis to keep our resident’s homes safe and comfortable.”

The national competition includes skill-based games built around common maintenance activities including: Dual Flush Retrofit, Appliance Repair, Fire & Carbon Monoxide Safety Installation, Key Control Deadbolt Test, Faucet Repair, Ceiling Fan Installation, Lamp & Ballast Retrofit, and a Race Car Competition on a pinewood derby style track where the cars are made out of maintenance supplies.
