DCA Adopts 2015 International Building Code and Related 2015 Model Codes

On Monday, September 21, 2015, the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) formally adopted the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and related 2015 model codes as subcodes under the N.J. Uniform Construction Code (Chapter 23 of Title 5 of the N.J. Administrative Code). These subcodes govern the construction of new buildings and become mandatory after a six month period where a developer can build under the previous code of the newly adopted code. The NAA/NMHC works closely with code consultants and collaborates with other industry representatives to assist the development of these codes at the national level.  Currently, NAA/NMHC has representation on 20 committees and participates in an additional 12 committees. Overall the industry’s focus is on improving existing code provisions and opposing any unnecessary escalation of construction costs. These codes must then be adopted at the state and local level, which the DCA’s action accomplishes.
