More than 800 New Jersey Children Get Into the Holiday Spirit at Meadowlands Expo Center

On Tues., Dec. 18th, more than 800 children from underserved communities throughout North Jersey enjoyed a winter wonderland at the New Jersey Apartment Association (NJAA) Charitable Fund’s Annual Children’s Holiday Party. NJAA members from throughout the state and students from local high schools volunteered at the event which included thousands of gifts, entertainment, lunch and festive treats.

New Jersey Apartment Association to Donate Up to $10K to Governor Christie's Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund

In an effort to help New Jersey continue to move forward in its post-hurricane relief efforts, the New Jersey Apartment Association (NJAA) has made a $5,000 donation to Governor Christie’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. The organization will also match donations to the fund from its members, for up to an additional $5,000.

New Jersey Apartment Association Charitable Fund Offers $20K in 2013-14 Scholarship Grants

The New Jersey Apartment Association Charitable Fund (NJAA Charitable Fund) is expanding its scholarship program from a total of $6K to $20K in scholarship grants for higher education in the 2013-14 academic year. NJAA employees and members, their dependents, and residents of NJAA member properties are eligible to apply for one of eight $2,500 scholarship grants.

NJAA Asks Governor to Sign Permit Extension Act into Law

The NJAA wrote to Governor Chris Christie on July 9, asking that he sign the Permit Extension Act (A-1338/S-743) into law as soon as practicable. The bi-partisan legislation, sponsored by Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden), Asw. BettyLou DeCroce (R-Morris), Assembly Housing Committee Chair Jerry Green (D-Union), Senator Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen) and Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex), passed both the General Assembly and State Senate overwhelming and now awaits the Governor’s signature.

Senate Judiciary Approves Nomination of DCA Commissioner Constable

On June 21, in a rare show of bi-partisans support of a nomination put forward by Governor Chris Christie, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously in favor of Richard E. Constable III, Esq., of Orange, Essex County, as the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs. Mr Constable has been serving in an acting capacity as Commissioner since December 2011, and addressed attendees at the NJAA's 23rd Annual Conference & Expo in Atlantic City last month.

New Jersey's Multi-family Housing Industry Contributes $5.7 Billion to State GDP and is Responsible for 1.2% of All Employment

A comprehensive study by the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and commissioned by the New Jersey Apartment Association, analyzes the economic contribution of the multi-family apartment industry to the New Jersey economy and concludes that the apartment industry – comprising over 500,000 rental units in 5+ unit buildings – is a significant component of the New Jersey economy. The study estimates that in 2010, the industry directly or indirectly supported over 44,000 jobs (1.2% of the state’s total employment), contributed $5.7 billion to the State Gross Domestic Product (GDP), generated over $1 billion in local tax revenues, and $140 million in tax revenue to the State of New Jersey.

NJAA Testifies In Opposition to Legislation that Would Reverse the Exemption from Rent Control for Newly Constructed Senior Apartments

On Thursday, May 10th, NJAA testified in the Assembly Housing Committee in opposition to legislation that would roll-back the exemption from rent control for newly constructed senior rental housing. The committee voted to release the bill, A2737, in a partisan 4-2 vote, and it now advances to the Assembly Floor. A-2737 is sponsored by Assemblyman Coughlin (D-Middlesex) and is identical to S-897, sponsored by Senator Vitale (D-Middlesex). NJAA is strongly opposed to this legislation.

Legal Victory Against Duplicitive Municipal Inspections: Trial Court Finds the City of Orange Twp.'s Inspection Ordinance Void and Unenforceable

A Judge of the New Jersey Superior Court, considering a challenge filed by a property owners group of the City of Orange, ruled Friday, March 2, 2012 that the municipality's annual inspection ordinance, which was enacted in December 2010, and required annual inspections of rental properties, was void and unenforceable.

NJAA Applauds Governor Christie for Vetoing Duplicative Facade Inspection Bill
