Governor Chris Christie announced today that Lori Grifa, Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), would be stepping down from her cabinet level post, effective January 2, 2012. Governor Approves State Budget for FY 2012; Cuts $900 Million in Spending Approved by Democrats

Democratic majorities in both houses of the Legislature passed a $30.6 billion State budget for FY 2012 in party-line votes of 24-15 in the Senate and 46-32 in the Assembly on June 29. The next day, Governor Chris Christie used his line item veto authority to sign the bill and simultaneously cut $900M in proposed spending. The new Fiscal Year begin July 1. The Governor also vetoed a proposal to increase the top tax rate on business and individuals, the so-called "millionaires tax."

NJAA Continues to Oppose Duplicative & Redundant Façade Inspection Bill

The NJAA continues to oppose legislation in the Senate and General Assembly that would create a new and duplicative inspection of high-rise building façades and exteriors. The bills, S-2771/A-3895, are modeled after façade inspection requirements initiated in Philadelphia, where there is no equivalent to comprehensive NJ's Hotel & Multiple Dwelling regulations, which have addressed statewide exterior inspection and maintenance standards since 1967. In partnership with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Business & Industry Association, the Consortium of Community Colleges is offering a comprehensive series of training courses to meet the federal and NJ state training requirements for workers disturbing lead-based paint. Apartment firms and workers performing renovation, repair and painting projects in pre-1978 housing must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Firms must use certified renovators who are trained by EPA approved providers to follow lead-safe work practices.
