DCA Releases Tenth Edition of the Truth-in-Renting Booklet
January 3, 2011
The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA)
has issued an update to its Truth-in-Renting booklet. The update,
released this January, revises the text to the Tenth Edition [2010] from
the Ninth Edition [2007].
The booklet is available online in a
searchable, printable, and free format. It is not yet available in
print; however, print copies will soon be made available for order
directly from the DCA.
The Truth-in-Renting Act (P.L. 1975, c.
310) requires property owners to distribute a copy of the DCA prepared
Truth-in-Renting Guide to each new resident. Property Owners must also
keep copies of the most current edition available in an area where
residents “can easily find it.” The DCA suggests that property owners
retain some documentation of having given the booklet to each new
resident (often tenants are asked to sign in the lease that they
received a copy). A fine of $100 for each offense can be assessed
against a property owner for noncompliance with this rule.
