NJAA Secures Key Amendments on Mold Legislation in Assembly Committee

Working with sponsor and members of the Assembly Environment & Solid Waste Committee, the NJAA was able to secure amendments to A-3773, which aims to require the Dept. of Community Affairs (DCA) to establish standards concerning mold exposure in all residential buildings. The bill was amended and released in a 6-0 vote by the Environment Committee on June 16. Asm Dan Benson (D-Mercer), the prime sponsor, agreed to add language at the NJAA's request clarifying the ability of professional maintenance staff at multi-family properties to continue to address mold-related issues as part of regular maintenance practices - as they are able to do so today. However, under the bill, once the Department of Community Affairs establishes standards and procedures for mold, maintenance staff must abide by those standards and incorporate them into everyday work practices.
